Not only do extreme weather events injure and kill people, they can also disrupt important infrastructure (such as utilities, roads, bridges, and power supplies). Hurricanes caused more than 1,000 deaths while floods caused less than 800. Extreme heat was the leading cause of weather-related deaths (more than 1,200) in the United States between 20. The correct answer is based on data from the National Weather Service. Floods, hurricanes, heat waves Answer to Q5: Heat waves, hurricanes, floods (correct)ĭ. Even small differences in seasonal average temperatures can result in increased illnesses and deaths. ![]() Extreme heat compromises the body's ability to regulate temperature and can particularly harm people who already suffer from chronic illnesses like heart, kidney, and lung disorders. However, extremely hot days can lead to dehydration, heat cramps, heatstroke, and other conditions. Which illness does NOT increase in frequency along with higher temperatures?Ĭases of arthritis are not expected to increase with higher temperatures. Learn more about how who you are influences your climate health risks. High-risk communities include low-income groups, people of color, and immigrant groups. People with mental illness, disabilities, or chronic medical conditions also face higher risks. Other people who are more vulnerable to climate change include pregnant women, children, and people who work outdoors. Some groups will experience worse health challenges than others. In general, health risks from climate change will not be evenly spread among people. Older adults are particularly at risk from extreme heat events, especially if they take certain medications that make it harder to maintain a healthy body temperature. The elderly have a higher risk of becoming ill or dying during heat waves as compared to other groups. Learn more about these air quality impacts, as well as the health effects from changes in wildfires, increased pollution, and indoor air conditions. Rising temperatures, altered rain patterns, and more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will lead to higher pollen counts, longer pollen seasons, and associated increases in asthma episodes and other allergic illnesses. Why would an obese person frequently feel hungry? They have enough fat stores to last a very long time. 6 This pattern can start a cycle of eating every few hours, raising glucose and insulin, and then eating more when when blood sugar drops. When these people run out of glucose from their last meal, instead of easily transitioning over to the fasted state to burn fat, it appears that they become hungry for more glucose (from carbohydrates) since their cells have decreased capacity for mobilizing and burning fat for energy. ![]() Someone with insulin resistance is burning predominately glucose on the cellular level, and they rarely get the opportunity to burn any body fat. 4 Chronic insulin resistance can lead to the ‘Metabolic Syndrome’: obesity, abdominal fat storage, high triglycerides, low HDL, and elevated glucose with eventual type 2 diabetes (1 in 12 humans on earth currently have full blown type 2 diabetes, while 35% of adults and 50% of older adults have Metabolic Syndrome, or pre-diabetes). Over time, this chronic exposure to too much insulin can lead to ‘insulin resistance’ where the body secretes even more insulin in response to the fed state. This leads to a chronic elevation of insulin and a near complete reliance on glucose. 3 As a result, our cells spend less time mobilizing and burning stored body fat, and instead we continuously use the glucose-burning pathways. Unfortunately, we seem to be spending less time in the fasted state and more time in the fed state. The practical importance of all this is that you can burn more stored body fat while in the fasted state, and you store more body fat while in the fed state. 2 The body first burns stored glucose from glycogen, and then starts mobilizing stored body fat from your fat cells and burning it for energy (instead of glucose). ![]() In the fasted state, insulin is more likely to be lower (while glucagon and growth hormone, opposing hormones to insulin, are elevated). In the fed state, insulin tend to be elevated, and this signals your body to halt any fat burning, to store excess calories in your fat cells, and burn glucose (from your last meal) instead. You can think of your body as having two different and opposing states: ‘Fed’, and ‘Fasted’. Click for more info.Ī guide by Ted Naiman, MD. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, it’s a myth that grinder pumps can’t clog. So if a grinder pump has more torque and chops up everything that comes its way, using one for every job seems like an easy decision to make.īut there are a number of reasons to stick to a sewage pump when the job calls for it, and not just because of the potentially higher energy costs of grinder pumps. However, just as with normal sewage pumps, they can last for years if well maintained. In general, they cost a bit more than regular sewage pumps and sometimes use more electricity. Grinder pumps are more powerful, starting at 1 hp. The slurry can then more easily pass through lines with smaller diameters than solid waste could, so the discharge line and pump connection is usually 2” or less, and some use 1.25”. In addition to having an impeller, grinder pumps use cutter blades to pulverize, or grind, solids. Residential sewage grinder pumps handle a lower volume of waste-between 35 and 70 gallons per minute-but over much longer distances, into the several thousands of feet. Grinder pumps are a type of sewage pump, which can explain why people sometimes use both terms interchangeably. But what about that other 10% of the time? What’s a grinder pump? Nine times out of 10, a regular sewage pump that doesn’t grind is what you’ll need for a residential plumbing job. And because what goes in the septic pump must fit through the pipes “as is,” sewage pumps have larger diameters for discharge line and pump connection: between 1.5” to 3”. A sewage ejector pump with 1/2 hp is all that’s typically needed for a residential home. Sump and sewage pumps usually have lower horsepower (hp) than grinder pumps. A typical sewage pump will use a vortex-style impeller to prevent clogging and efficiently move the liquid. Each type of impeller and its dimensions correspond with different head pressures. There are three general types of impellers: vortex, semi-open and enclosed channel. Also called sewage ejector pumps, some can move up to 200 gallons a minute of waste horizontally as far as 750 feet.Ī sewage pump uses an impeller to provide the head pressure that moves the waste vertically. Unlike effluent or sump pumps, which should be used only to remove clear or gray water, sewage pumps are designed to move “dirty” or sewage waste to a septic tank, gravity flow sewer main or leach field. Whether you’re replacing or installing new, discover how to choose the best residential sewage or grinder pump for the job. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, understanding the difference between sewage and grinder pumps is important to get the job done right the first time. If you're working on a replacement sewage pump, it can seem as simple as looking at the model number and ordering a new pump, but what if installing the wrong one the first time led to the problems? And if you’re plumbing new construction, making the right choice means the homeowner will be satisfied with your work for years to come. ![]() ![]() ![]() – Move Mario/cursor, climb poles, angle camera in second-person mode, fly (when wearing the Wing Cap).Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo 64 Controller , – Move Mario/cursor, climb poles, angle camera in second-person mode, fly (when wearing the Wing Cap).1.3.1 Co-Star Mode (when using horizontal Joy-Con)Ĭontrols Super Mario 64.1.1.1 Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo 64 Controller. The first entailed the purchase of the game itself, while the second involved listening to the music player on the game's website. Single-clone algal cultures (lacking genetic variability) produced short cycle periods and typical quarter-period phase lags between prey and predator densities, whereas multi-clonal (genetically variable) algal cultures produced long cycles with prey and predator densities nearly out of phase, exactly as predicted. We verified the predicted existence of an evolutionary tradeoff between algal competitive ability and defence against consumption, and examined its effects on cycle dynamics by manipulating the evolutionary potential of the prey population. Our experiments tested explicit predictions from a model for our system that allows prey evolution 9. Here we report that rapid prey evolution in response to oscillating predator density affects predator–prey (rotifer–algal) cycles in laboratory microcosms. However, theoretical predictions of how rapid evolution can affect ecological dynamics 8 are inconclusive and often depend on untested model assumptions 8.
